The Acting National Youth Leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Maazi Chukwuma Okpalaezukwu, has praised President Bola Tinubu for signing the South East Development Commission (SEDC) into law.
Speaking to reporters, Maazi Okpalaezukwu stated that President Tinubu’s action marks the end of the “age-long civil war” in the Southeast, referring to the resurgence of Biafra agitation due to the federal government’s failure to honor the treaty of Reconciliation, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction.
The Ohaneze Ndigbo Youth Leader expressed optimism that the Commission would not only heal the region but also enhance collective efforts to restore peace and stability in Nigeria, particularly in the Southeast. He also lauded key stakeholders, including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, Southeast Governors, and others who played significant roles in realizing this long-overdue achievement.
Maazi Okpalaezukwu emphasized the importance of the Commission in demonstrating reconciliation, promoting rehabilitation, and facilitating reconstruction to bring peace and stability to the region and the nation as a whole.
The bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Kalu and other Southeast House members, aims to establish a commission responsible for managing funds from the federation account to reconstruct and rehabilitate infrastructure damaged during the civil war, 54 years after its end. Additionally, the Commission will address ecological and other developmental challenges in the Southeast states of Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi.
