Shops and markets across Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, were closed today as the town held a solemn inter-denominational funeral service to honor victims of the tragic stampede that occurred on December 21, 2024.
The stampede, which took place during a Christmas palliative distribution by the Obijackson Foundation, claimed 22 lives and left many others injured, casting a shadow of grief over the community.
Dignitaries at the event included the traditional ruler of Okija, Igwe Nnamdi Okezie; the Founder of Obijackson Foundation, Chief Ernest Obiejesi; Chairman of Dozzy Group, Chief Chukwudozie Nwankwo; and the retired Pioneer Anglican Bishop of Ihiala Diocese, Right Reverend Ralph Okafor.
In his address, Chief Obiejesi expressed profound sorrow over the incident and assured the community that measures would be implemented to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Following the service, families who had not yet buried their loved ones proceeded with their private funeral arrangements. The town remained in a state of mourning as residents reflected on the painful loss.
