Police, ACTDA Sensitize Transport Operators to Curb Indiscriminate Passenger Loading

The Divisional Police Officer of Central Police Station, Awka, Mr. Vena Leelea, alongside the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), has conducted a sensitization campaign targeting shuttle bus drivers and tricycle operators. The effort focuses on reducing the indiscriminate loading and unloading of passengers, which has been causing significant traffic disruptions.

Mr. Leelea emphasized that Governor Chukwuma Soludo is concerned about the actions of many commercial drivers and tricycle operators, who often stop along the roadsides to pick up and drop off passengers. This practice, prevalent along the Arroma-Amansea, Arroma-Nkwo Amenyi, and Eke Awka routes, has been contributing to severe human and vehicular congestion in the State’s three-arm zone in Awka.

The DPO highlighted the existence of designated parks for shuttle buses and tricycles, urging operators to use these facilities to avoid causing road obstructions that sometimes result in accidents.

Mr. Ossy Onuko, Managing Director and CEO of ACTDA, represented by Mr. Nkwachukwu Okonkwo, reiterated the agency’s commitment to restoring order and discipline within the area. He warned that ACTDA would intensify efforts to ensure compliance with government regulations, particularly against those trading or begging under the Arroma flyover.

Comrade Osita Obi, National Coordinator of the Recover Nigeria Project, also supported the campaign, stressing that the Soludo administration is dedicated to maintaining orderliness and decency, especially in Awka’s three-arm zone. He called on all involved to utilize the designated parks to ensure a more orderly environment.

In response, Mr. Paul Uche, a shuttle bus driver, appealed for the provision of additional parks to facilitate their operations more efficiently.
