The Nigeria Police Force has announced that enforcement of third-party vehicle insurance laws will commence nationwide on February 1, 2025.
This decision was disclosed during a meeting between the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Commissioner for Insurance, Olusegun Omosehin, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Mr. Omosehin, accompanied by officials from the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), lauded the IGP for his reforms, including the establishment of the Police Insurance Bank Limited. He emphasized the importance of collaboration to ensure compliance with mandatory insurance policies designed to protect road users.
In his response, the IGP highlighted the legal obligation for all vehicle owners to secure third-party insurance as stipulated under Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle Act. He warned that failure to comply could attract fines, imprisonment, or both.
The enforcement aligns with the police’s mandate to safeguard life and property while fostering inter-agency collaboration for public safety. Vehicle owners are urged to update their insurance documentation before the enforcement date to avoid penalties.
