The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) has clarified the recent tariff hike for Band A customers, attributing it to the rising cost of doing business in Nigeria.
Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt on Monday, PHED’s spokesperson, Olubukola Ilevbare, stated that the adjustment, effective from April 3, aligns with the 2024 Supplementary Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO).
Ilevbare highlighted that the significant increase of over 200 per cent for Band A customers is in line with the MYTO agreement reached with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Company (NERC).
He explained, “The new tariff aims to mitigate the impact of recent changes in key economic indicators such as inflation rate, foreign exchange rates, and gas prices. It is geared towards enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring a reliable power supply for customers.”
Under the revised tariff structure, customers on Band A Feeders, who receive a minimum of 20 hours of electricity daily, will now be billed at N225 per kilowatt.
Emphasizing the purpose of the adjustment, Ilevbare affirmed that it would enable PHED to deliver improved service to customers in response to the increased cost of electricity.
“PHED is fully committed to meeting the objectives of the new tariff order. Customers in Bands B, C, D, and E can rest assured that their tariffs remain unchanged. We anticipate better service delivery as a result of the 2024 MYTO implementation,” he assured.
PHED serves customers in Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Rivers states, striving to meet the electricity needs of communities across its operational areas.
