The Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC) in Awka has launched the 2024/2025 State Leadership Training for newly elected prefects from public and mission secondary schools in Anambra State.
The training event, held at Community Secondary School in Ifite-Ogwari, saw the participation of students, teachers, principals, and PPSSC officials, among others. This annual leadership training, sanctioned by PPSSC, is part of its proactive strategy for school management.
In her keynote address, PPSSC Chairman Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu congratulated the new prefects, emphasizing that leadership involves service and inspiring others. She noted that effective leadership is crucial for the success of any school or organization. Professor Ikediugwu explained that prefects play a key role in fostering cooperation, peace, discipline, and unity within schools. She highlighted the necessity of this training to prepare prefects for the challenges they will face, equipping them with the diplomacy and wisdom needed for effective leadership.
Professor Ikediugwu urged the prefects to emulate Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s exemplary leadership, which has significantly elevated Anambra’s status in Nigeria. She also expressed gratitude to all contributors who helped make the leadership training a success.
Chief Raphael Machie, who chaired the event and is a recipient of the 2010 Presidential Award for school administration, emphasized the importance of teaching young leaders about the challenges and benefits of leadership. He commended PPSSC and the Anambra government for their ongoing efforts in the education sector.
In her goodwill message, Mrs. Nkoli Agbata, Director of Education for PPSSC Otuocha zone, highlighted that the leadership training is part of PPSSC’s annual Guidance and Counseling Programs. These programs aim to prepare newly elected prefects to balance their leadership responsibilities with academic excellence.
The training included presentations on various topics:
– “Good Leadership: A Condition for Social Transformation” by Mrs. Uju Mebo
– “The Role of Prefects in Eliminating Anti-Social Behaviour in Schools” by Mrs. Anna Ndianefo
– “Prefects and Crisis Management” by Mrs. Eunice Mbaegbu
– “The Place of Prefects in School Governance” by Mr. Michael Ekwunife
The ceremony also featured the induction of the new prefects by Reverend Canon Anderson Onyeanona, along with a question and answer session, welcome song, and cultural dance performances.
