The Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC), led by its Chairman, Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu, is intensifying efforts to remove child-hawkers from the streets of Anambra State and enroll them in school. Professor Ikediugwu recently called on the 21 Local Government Mayors across the state to partner with the PPSSC to support the free education initiative launched by Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration.
With the endorsement of Oyi Local Government Mayor, Hon. Emmanuel Nweke, Professor Ikediugwu and her team embarked on their “Catch-Them-And-Send-Them-To-School Free Sensitization Exercise” in Oyi, moving through motor parks, markets, and surrounding areas in Awkuzu. During the exercise, child-hawkers found working during school hours were taken off the streets.
Ahead of the exercise, Professor Ikediugwu met with Mayor Nweke, who provided security support for the team’s efforts. Children apprehended in the operation were taken to New Era Secondary School, Nteje, where the principal was instructed to register them and reach out to their parents to ensure consistent school attendance.
Awkuzu Market Association Chairman, Mr. Nwizu, expressed his support for the initiative and commended Governor Soludo for implementing the free education policy. The sensitization drive revealed that some market women were unaware of the policy, underscoring the need for continued public awareness.
Dr. Ngozi Ekwunife, Member in-charge of the Ogidi Educational Zone, and security personnel from the council area also participated in the exercise. The campaign previously kicked off on October 8, 2024, at Oye Agu Abagana and Eke Awka markets, marking a significant step in promoting education accessibility for all children in Anambra State.
