President Tinubu to Skip 79th UN General Assembly; Vice President Shettima to Lead Delegation

President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York this year. A statement from Special Adviser to the President, Bayo Onanuga, announced that Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation in his absence.

The statement noted that President Tinubu, who returned to Nigeria last Sunday following trips to China and the United Kingdom, intends to focus on domestic issues and address the country’s challenges, particularly in light of the recent devastating flooding.

During the UNGA, which runs from September 24 to September 28, 2024, Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, participate in key sideline events, and engage in bilateral meetings.

This year’s UNGA theme is “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations.”
