The Anambra State Chapter of Prison Fellowship Nigeria (PFN) has officially been inaugurated, accompanied by a two-day training session aimed at equipping members with essential skills to effectively carry out their duties.
Mr. Benson Iwuagu, the Executive Director of PFN, explained that the fellowship, a faith-based organization, is composed of Christians from various denominations. Its mission is to reform inmates through the teaching of God’s word, fostering positive behavioral changes.
During the event held in Awka, the Controller of the Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Mr. Joseph Usifo, highlighted the importance of both physical and spiritual rehabilitation for inmates. He expressed gratitude to PFN for addressing the spiritual needs of inmates, which is vital for their reformation.
Apostle Peter Okoye, the State Chairman of PFN, noted that while the state chapter’s executive members were elected last year, the formal inauguration marked a significant milestone. He added that the subsequent training would enhance their impact on inmates by demonstrating God’s love and helping them reintegrate as better members of society.
Mr. Michael Ade, Head of Training for PFN, emphasized that rehabilitation and reintegration, especially through Behavioral Modification Training, are central to PFN’s work. However, he pointed out that funding remains a significant challenge in achieving the fellowship’s goals.
The fellowship also aims to reduce the inmate population by preventing recidivism—ensuring that former inmates do not return to correctional facilities after completing their sentences.
Participants, including Nigeria Correctional Services officer Mr. Justin Nwachukwu and Evangelist Ada Emecheta, praised the training for its impact, expressing readiness to bring about transformation in the lives of inmates through spiritual guidance and empowerment.
