Prof. Pat Utomi Urges NIPR to Hold Politicians Accountable, Calls for Reduction of ‘Stupidity’ in Governance

Renowned political economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, has called on the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) to play a crucial role in holding political officeholders accountable as a means to promote peace and reconciliation in Nigeria. He urged the body to reduce the levels of ignorance and self-centeredness within the political sphere, which he believes contribute to division and societal dysfunction.

Utomi made these remarks during the HRM Obi Alfred N. Achebe 2nd Lecture Series, organized by the NIPR in collaboration with Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), at the ETF Auditorium in Igbariam, Anambra State. The theme of his lecture was *”Achieving Peace and Reconciliation in Nigeria: The Public Relations Approach.”*

In his lecture, Prof. Utomi criticized the tendency of many Nigerians to act out of selfish or tribal interests, often viewing those outside their ethnic or religious group as adversaries. He emphasized the need for political officeholders and citizens alike to rise above these narrow perspectives for the greater good of the country.

Utomi also referenced an analysis by Berkeley Economic Historian Carlo M. Cipolla, categorizing people into four types: the intelligent (those who benefit both themselves and society), bandits (who harm others for their gain), the unfortunate (those who unintentionally harm others), and the stupid (those who harm both themselves and others). He described political supporters who back corrupt politicians as “stupid,” regardless of their education or social status, and urged the NIPR to work toward reducing their influence.

“Stupidity in our society comes dressed as journalists, academics, and even men of God. Silence in the face of evil is itself evil,” he added. Utomi encouraged public relations professionals to hold politicians accountable and challenge the toxic political culture in Nigeria.

In her welcome address, COOU Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Omenugha, praised the lecture series as a platform to promote peace and unity in a country characterized by immense ethnic diversity. She highlighted the institution’s commitment to equipping students with skills to navigate and mitigate such diversity-driven challenges.

HRM Obi Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, in his remarks, reflected on his career, particularly his time in Shell and his role in advocating for the Ogoni people during the Nigerian oil crisis. He emphasized the importance of truth, transparency, and leadership in driving progress, noting that good leadership does not happen by chance but requires deliberate effort and nurturing.

Sen. Ben Ndi Obi, who chaired the event, commended NIPR and COOU for organizing the lecture and stressed that peace and reconciliation are critical for Nigeria’s sustainable development. He warned that without peace, justice, and equity, meaningful progress cannot be achieved.

Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, lauded the event, emphasizing the rebranding efforts in the state under Governor Soludo’s administration. He highlighted ongoing developmental projects and initiatives aimed at reducing illiteracy and unemployment in the state.

The event concluded with the decoration of Prof. Pat Utomi as a Fellow of NIPR, along with award presentations to distinguished members of the organization.
