PSN Anambra Expresses Concern Over Rise in Counterfeit Drugs and Quack Health Practitioners on World Pharmacy Day

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Anambra State chapter, has voiced its concern over the increasing prevalence of counterfeit drugs, quack medical and pharmaceutical practitioners, and the uncontrolled access to illicit substances in the state.

Speaking at a press briefing in Awka to mark World Pharmacy Day, celebrated globally on September 25, PSN Chairman, Pharmacist Emeka Okpana, stressed that these issues pose a significant threat to public health and undermine the integrity of the healthcare system in both the state and the country. He was joined at the event by the Vice Chairman, Pharm. Alex Ndupuechi, and Secretary, Pharm. Onyeka Obidiegwu.

Pharmacist Okpana emphasized the importance of coordinated action, noting that collaboration with regulatory and law enforcement agencies is crucial to curbing the rise of fake drugs and ensuring the safety of Anambra’s communities. He called on pharmacists to continue their role as guardians of public health through advocacy, education, and partnerships aimed at improving access to quality healthcare.

The PSN also commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his administration’s health reforms, which have greatly contributed to the advancement of universal healthcare coverage in Anambra State.

This year’s World Pharmacy Day theme, “Pharmacists: Meeting Global Health Needs,” underscores the vital role pharmacists play in addressing health challenges and ensuring the well-being of the public.
