Radio and Television Technicians in Anambra Appeal to Governor Soludo for Intervention

The Association of Radio and Television Technicians, Anambra State Chapter, has issued an urgent appeal to Governor Chukwuma Soludo following the closure of the Electronics Spare Parts Market on Iweka Road, Onitsha by the Anambra State government.

The association, led by its Chairman, Mr. Sebanstine Ekunite, made the appeal during a gathering at the ASMATA Office on Modebe Street, Onitsha. A significant number of technicians participated, carrying placards with messages such as “Governor Soludo, you are doing well,” “Radio and Television Technicians are not Members of Electrical Spare Parts Traders Association,” “Governor Soludo, come to our rescue,” and “Freedom of Association is our fundamental right.”

Mr. Ekunite expressed the technicians’ distress over the market closure, which has left them unable to conduct business amidst the country’s challenging economic conditions. He explained that the Electronics Spare Parts Traders Association in Onitsha is pressuring them to relocate to a new site at Harbour Industrial Layout, which he described as an act of intimidation.

Comrade Uchenna Ikechi, an executive member of the association, emphasized that their association is distinct from the traders, noting that they neither contributed to the construction of the new market nor do they have shops there. He called on the state government and ASMATA to intervene, highlighting a previous court ruling in their favor that affirmed their right to operate independently.

Chief Eric Uwaoma, ASMATA Chairman for the Onitsha Zone, addressed the technicians on behalf of ASMATA President General, Chief Humphrey Anuna. He praised the technicians for their peaceful approach and initiative in seeking resolution through ASMATA. Uwaoma assured them that Governor Soludo’s administration is committed to maintaining peace and urged them to be patient as ASMATA leadership engages in dialogue with the associations to find a lasting solution.
