Following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) revocation of Heritage Bank’s operating license, reality star Mercy Eke has expressed distress, revealing she has over N100 million in her account with the bank.
Eke, who won the fourth edition of the Big Brother Naija reality show, explained that she opened the account because Heritage Bank sponsored the show. She also blamed her account manager for persuading her to deposit her money there despite being aware of the bank’s issues.
On her X handle Thursday, Eke wrote, “I really don’t know how to react about this. I have been hoping for the best, thinking there’s a way out… #HeritageBank.”
In response to a fan who asked if she had an account with the bank, Eke confirmed, “I do… and have above 100m with them.”
When questioned about why she opened the account, Eke explained, “That was the bank that sponsored BBN during my set. For them to pay our money, we were advised to open an account with them. Stupid me went ahead and funded the account. Don’t worry, I’m full of regrets right now.”
Another fan asked about her account manager’s response, to which Eke replied, “She lured me into fixing my money, knowing fully well there’s been issues with the bank. I don’t have words for her; I blame myself.”
Eke also disclosed that she has submitted a notice to the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) in a bid to retrieve her money.
The NDIC recently began the liquidation process of Heritage Bank, starting with the verification and payment of the bank’s depositors. However, refunds will initially focus on those with N5 million and below.
