Rotimi Amaechi Critiques Nigerians’ Response to Economic Hardship, Calls for Youth Agitation

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has expressed his disappointment at the perceived apathy among Nigerians towards the nation’s ongoing economic challenges, particularly among the youth. In an interview with Igbere TV, Amaechi lamented the soaring cost of living, rising fuel prices, and other economic pressures, noting his expectation for a more vigorous public reaction.

Amaechi remarked, “I expected more agitation, especially from the youth. I thought we would see protests in the streets, but it seems people are not expressing the kind of anger I expected.” His comments highlight a growing concern that citizens are not sufficiently vocal against the current economic conditions affecting their daily lives.

Having served nearly eight years as Minister of Transportation under the Muhammadu Buhari administration, Amaechi has been vocal about the state of the economy. He emphasized that the lack of significant pushback from the public is puzzling, stating, “You cannot have a situation where a group of people are mismanaging resources and expect citizens to remain silent. I am truly baffled by the lack of action.”

He cited the escalating cost of diesel as an example of the economic strain, questioning the appropriateness of political campaigns in such trying times. “The price of diesel is at an all-time high, and even some of us are finding it difficult to afford it. Yet, the general public seems unmoved,” he said.

Amaechi’s comments reflect a broader frustration with the current socio-economic climate, urging citizens, especially the youth, to take a more active role in demanding accountability and change from their leaders.
