SGF George Akume Labels Wage Demands Unrealistic

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has expressed concerns over the wage increase demands from organized labour, describing them as unrealistic.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday during a meeting with the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Akume, a former Governor of Benue State, sought support from the Christian community as the tripartite committee on minimum wage continues its negotiations.

Akume highlighted the financial strain these demands would place, using his personal situation as an example. “I can’t afford to pay my driver one hundred thousand because they are four,” Akume stated.

He questioned the feasibility of meeting such demands, asking, “Where do we get that money from?”

The SGF’s remarks come amidst ongoing discussions around wage increases, with organized labour pushing for a minimum wage of N100,000. Akume’s comments reflect the broader concerns about the financial implications of such a significant wage hike.

Earlier reports from DAILY POST also quoted Akume accusing organized labour of committing treason by shutting down the national grid during a nationwide strike, further highlighting the tensions between the government and labour unions over wage issues.
