The Anambra State Police Command has provided clarification on a shooting incident that occurred at Izuchukwu Junction on the Nnobi/Nnewi road at approximately 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. Initial reports had suggested the involvement of unfriendly forces, but the police have since confirmed that the exchange of gunfire was the result of a misunderstanding between security operatives.
According to the police, the incident occurred when security forces mistakenly identified a group of police officers as hostile forces, leading to a brief gun duel. The exchange began after security operatives, who were conducting an investigation, trailed a suspect to a checkpoint where the confrontation ensued.
The situation escalated when bullets hit the fuel tank of a Toyota Venza Sedan, causing it to catch fire. Sadly, two innocent passers-by were injured in the incident and were immediately transported to the hospital for treatment.
In a statement, the Anambra State Police Command emphasized that the attack was not linked to non-state actors and had no connection to the ongoing burial of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, as had been speculated.
The Command has reassured the public that the situation is under control and has called for calm while the investigation is ongoing. To ensure security during the burial ceremonies of the late Senator Ubah, joint security forces have been deployed to maintain peace in Nnewi.
The police have urged residents to remain patient and allow for a thorough investigation of the incident.
