Governor Chukwuma Soludo has reiterated his administration’s dedication to strengthening the health sector as Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka, hosted its 2024 end-of-year appreciation and award ceremony.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, Governor Soludo highlighted the significance of healthcare to Anambra State’s development. He outlined his government’s efforts to enhance COOUTH, including the ongoing construction of a trauma center, for which over ₦200 million has been allocated for equipment.
The Chief Medical Director of COOUTH, Dr. Joe Akabuike, explained that the event was organized to recognize outstanding staff members and philanthropists who have contributed to the hospital’s growth. He commended the governor for his continued support and interventions in the hospital’s operations.
Among the honorees was Chief Azubuike Ekweozor, a businessman and philanthropist, recognized for consistently offsetting medical bills for indigent patients. During the ceremony, Chief Ekweozor pledged ₦5 million to settle outstanding bills for financially disadvantaged patients.
Dr. Lawrence Ikeakor, the hospital’s pioneer Chief Medical Director, received a meritorious service award, his first since leaving office seven years ago. He expressed deep appreciation for the recognition.
Speaking at the event, the Anambra State Head of Service, Barrister Theodora Igwegbe, urged the hospital to maintain its commitment to excellence.
The ceremony also included the presentation of COOUTH’s 2024 scorecard, which highlighted the hospital’s achievements over the past year and its plans for future development.
