Soludo’s Aide Calls for Artisan Certification to Prevent Building Collapses

Dr. Nelson Omenugha, Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Youth Empowerment Programs, has advocated for the certification of artisans in response to the recent building collapses in Anambra State. Appearing before the panel of inquiry set up by the state government, Dr. Omenugha addressed the urgent need for professional approaches to construction practices.

The panel, convened in Awka by Governor Soludo, is investigating the causes of the building collapses at Odu Igbo Ochanja Onitsha and DMGS Onitsha. Its mandate includes making recommendations to prevent future incidents.

Dr. Omenugha expressed concern over the increasing number of building collapses in the state and proposed several measures to address the issue. Chief among his recommendations was the proper training, certification, and documentation of artisans working on construction sites. He emphasized that accountability is crucial to preventing avoidable incidents that often result in loss of life and resources.

Presenting a framework for artisan certification, Dr. Omenugha argued that standardized training and certification would ensure consistent quality and safety in construction practices. He highlighted the need for engineers to enforce these standards to mitigate risks associated with carelessness or resource mismanagement.

Commending the panel for their dedication, Dr. Omenugha pledged his support in achieving the best outcomes for Anambra State. The panel’s chairman, Engr. Victor Meju, lauded Dr. Omenugha’s recommendations and assured that they would be incorporated into the policy framework submitted to the governor.

Engr. Meju emphasized that the panel aims to develop a concrete action plan to eliminate building collapses in the state, noting that adherence to professional ethics is essential for accountability and safety in construction.
