Governors in the South-East Zone have committed to strengthening the Igbo apex socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in a bid to drive regional development. The pledge was made during the group’s General Assembly held in Enugu on Friday, where new executives were elected.
Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, spoke on behalf of the governors, congratulating Ndi Igbo for the harmonious conduct of the convention. He emphasized that the governors had agreed to support Ohanaeze Ndigbo, ensuring that the group remains true to its founding principles and free from any form of misconduct.
“We have also decided that those to be elected into the new executives of Ohanaeze must have a second address and be supported by their home state so that we have somebody to hold responsible in case of bad behaviour,” Uzodimma stated.
Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State, who hosted the convention, called for unity among the people of the region, stressing that the Igbo interest should supersede narrow, partisan politics. He acknowledged the leadership legacy of prominent Igbo leaders such as Dr. Michael Okpara, whose sense of brotherhood and patriotism contributed to the region’s development.
Outgoing President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Artichoke Chukwu, reflected on the group’s journey and expressed hope for a more unified and resilient organisation under new leadership.
Sen. Azuta Mbata from Ikwere, Rivers State, emerged as the new President General during the event, with the mandate to steer the group forward.
