South East Labour Party Calls on President Tinubu to Release IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu

The Labour Party caucus of the South East Houses of Assembly has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. They argue that his release could curb the criminal activities in the South East region that have been masquerading as legitimate agitation.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), remains detained despite court orders for his release. In a statement made in Awka, the Caucus Leader and representative of Onitsha South Two Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Honorable Jude Umennajiego, expressed that their appeal aligns with the calls from notable figures like elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark and Mr. Peter Obi for Kanu’s release to foster lasting peace in the South East.

The caucus also urged South East Governors to grant financial autonomy to State Houses of Assembly, emphasizing the importance of the separation of powers as outlined in the constitution and supported by an executive order from former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Addressing the ongoing dispute between the Federal Government and organized labour over minimum wage agreements, the caucus pressed for a swift resolution. They highlighted the rising cost of goods and services, which current workers’ incomes cannot sustain.

Additionally, they called on the National Judiciary Council to reexamine the sentencing of Honorable Bright Ngene from Enugu state, suggesting that his trial was expedited and politically motivated as he was a candidate for a rerun election in Enugu state.
