The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has agreed to suspend its ongoing strike for one month. This decision follows the Federal Government’s payment of one month out of the four months of withheld salaries owed to union members.
The strike, which began on October 28, 2024, led to halted activities across Nigerian universities. In a joint statement on Sunday, SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi directed members to resume work on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, after an agreement with the government to release a second month of back pay by the end of November.
The unions, however, reaffirmed their demands for the remaining two months of salaries, N50 billion in earned allowances, and implementation of the 2009 agreements. The strike was initially triggered by the government’s invocation of the “No Work, No Pay” policy. Further negotiations with government officials, including the Minister of Education and the Department of State Services, are ongoing.
