Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has confirmed his departure from the role following the team’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Rwanda. Speaking at the Kigali Airport, Eguavoen explained that his mandate was to manage the team for the ongoing 2025 AFCON qualifiers, specifically for matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda, and that his task has now ended.
Eguavoen expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance and thanked the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) leadership and the players for their hard work and discipline during his short tenure. Reflecting on his role, Eguavoen said, “I have been given a mandate to handle two games. I am very pleased with the boys and grateful for the support from the NFF leadership.”
While addressing the upcoming fixture against Libya, Eguavoen remained uncertain about his involvement but offered his insights, stating that with the current spirit exhibited by the players, Nigeria has a bright future ahead.
Eguavoen, no stranger to coaching the Super Eagles, previously led the team to the second round of the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon. His exit leaves the NFF with the task of appointing a permanent coach ahead of future AFCON qualifiers.
