In a remarkable display of prompt intervention, officials from the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) successfully evacuated all occupants of the Dubai Hostel in Ifite Awka, Awka South Local Government Area, just days before the building collapsed. The evacuation, completed less than 78 hours before the collapse, ensured no casualties were reported.
The Development Control Unit of ACTDA identified the structural issues with the building and acted swiftly to prevent potential disaster. The building’s collapse came after the timely removal of all residents, highlighting the importance of the Authority’s responsiveness.
Mr. Ossy Onuko, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ACTDA, expressed his gratitude that no lives were lost and praised his team for their swift action. He also acknowledged the support from Governor Chukwuma Soludo, which enabled the effective execution of their duties.
Onuko emphasized the potential scale of the tragedy had the evacuation not occurred and called on residents to report distressed buildings and illegal structures to aid ACTDA’s efforts.
Mr. Nkwachukwu Okonkwo, Deputy Commander of the Development Control Unit, led the evacuation and echoed the relief that no lives were lost. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to its responsibilities, ensuring the safety of the community through diligent and fearless operations.
