The ongoing feud between the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, and the national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Musa Kwankwaso, took a noticeable turn on Friday when both politicians avoided eye contact at the wedding of Laila, daughter of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in Abuja.
The ceremony, which united Laila with Saleh Maitala, son of former Minister of Education Adamu Adamu, was held at the National Mosque and drew a large gathering of political heavyweights.
Despite being seated near each other, Ganduje and Kwankwaso made a conspicuous effort to avoid any interaction. The tension was palpable when they spotted each other and quickly looked away. Even during prayers, the two politicians ensured they did not sit too close, with other dignitaries including Col. Buba Marwa (retd.), ex-Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, and former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff sitting between them.
The wedding, which occurred just days after a formal marriage request led by former Kaduna State Governor Nasiru El-Rufai, was attended by a host of political figures, including former governors Sule Lamido, Murtala Nyako, Ibrahim Shekarau, and Adamu Muazu, as well as the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, and Senator Abdul Ningi.
Despite the heavy political presence, the underlying tension between Ganduje and Kwankwaso was a focal point, with both leaders avoiding any form of communication throughout the event. Attempts to get comments from either politician after the ceremony were unsuccessful as they swiftly departed the venue with their entourages.
