The Old Students’ Association of Timi Agbale Grammar School in Ede, Osun State, has honored Chief Joseph Opatola, a former principal, 45 years after his departure from the school. The event took place on Saturday, where the refurbished school hall was named in his honor.
Chief Opatola, who served as principal from 1975 to 1980 and currently holds the title of Ekerin of Awe in Oyo State, was recognized for his significant contributions during his tenure. Dr. Bola Adewara, President of the Old Students’ Association, described Opatola as a “mentor and father figure” to his students.
“Today, we honor our principal, Chief Opatola, who impacted our lives immensely during his time at the school,” Adewara said. He emphasized the association’s long-standing desire to recognize Opatola’s efforts, stating, “Since our formation in 2011, we have discussed how we can honor him, and today we have realized that goal.”
Adewara shared how many of Opatola’s former students, now in positions of authority, have testified to his positive influence. “This man is not just a principal; he was a mentor and a father to us. We are delighted to see him here today, healthy and happy.”
In his acceptance speech, Chief Opatola expressed gratitude for the honor, noting the significance of being recognized for his work so many years later. “I am happy to be alive to witness this occasion, where my relationship with the school, from 45 years ago, is still being appreciated. This recognition is a rare honor and privilege,” he remarked.
The ceremony highlighted the lasting impact of Chief Opatola’s leadership on his students and the commitment of the alumni to acknowledge and celebrate their former principal’s contributions to their lives and the school.
