Tinubu, ECOWAS, and African Leaders Congratulate John Mahama on Ghana’s Presidential Election Victory

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has congratulated John Dramani Mahama on his victory in Ghana’s December 7 general election. Tinubu commended Mahama’s return to power and praised the peaceful democratic process in Ghana.

This followed the concession of defeat by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s Vice President and candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party, who acknowledged Mahama’s lead even before the Electoral Commission’s official declaration. Internal reviews from the National Democratic Congress showed Mahama leading with 56.3% of the votes, compared to Bawumia’s 41.3%.

In a statement issued by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Nigerian leader expressed hope that Mahama’s leadership would further strengthen stability in the West African region. Tinubu, who also chairs ECOWAS, highlighted the importance of Ghana’s democratic maturity as an example for the continent.

“President Tinubu applauds the people of Ghana for their commitment to democracy and the peaceful conduct of elections, demonstrating that the people’s will remains central to leadership selection,” the statement read.

Tinubu also acknowledged Bawumia’s statesmanship in conceding defeat, emphasizing that his actions reinforced Ghana’s democratic principles.

Similarly, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Touray, congratulated Mahama on his victory and commended the Ghanaian people for their peaceful electoral process. Touray praised Bawumia for his swift concession, calling it a hallmark of statesmanship and love for country.

Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, also extended congratulations to Mahama, describing his victory as a testament to the trust Ghanaians have in his leadership. Fayemi lauded Bawumia’s graceful acceptance of the election results, noting that his decision exemplified the highest standard of African political leadership.

Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s President from 2012 to 2017, is set to return to Jubilee House after receiving a resounding mandate from the electorate. Tinubu expressed eagerness to work with Mahama’s administration to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen regional cooperation.

Ghana’s peaceful election and leadership transitions have been widely celebrated, reinforcing its status as a model for democracy in Africa.
