President Bola Tinubu has expressed his administration’s readiness to adopt successful models from other countries to enhance Nigeria’s telecom sector.
Tinubu made this known on Thursday during a meeting with an Airtel delegation led by its Chairman, Sunil Bharti Mittal, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to a statement by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President said his government would review the telecom regulatory framework to align with global best practices and protect critical infrastructure.
“The entire ecosystem will be further examined, and if there is anything we can copy from India, we are ready to do so. We are prepared to learn. We are not ashamed of copying what is working in other climes,” Tinubu said.
He assured the delegation of his administration’s commitment to creating a favourable business environment through tax reforms and other incentives.
“We will work with tax administrators to ensure we encourage growth and opportunities,” he added.
Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, commended the President for supporting the telecom sector and approving the protection of fibre optic and undersea cables as critical national assets.
Chairman of Airtel, Sunil Bharti Mittal, praised Tinubu’s economic reforms, likening Nigeria’s current situation to India’s in 1991, when similar policies led to economic transformation.
He commended the government’s decision to remove the petrol subsidy and float the naira, describing the reforms as bold and necessary.
Mittal expressed confidence that the policies would set Nigeria on the path of long-term economic growth.
