Tutorial School Operators Call for Single Five-Year Tenure for JAMB Registrars

Operators of tutorial schools have urged the Federal Government to restrict the tenure of registrars of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to a single five-year term without renewal.

While the JAMB Act allows the President to appoint a registrar for five years with an option of extension, the operators argue that prolonged tenures weaken accountability and negatively affect stakeholders.

The current JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, was first appointed in August 2016 by former President Muhammadu Buhari and reappointed in 2021 for another five years, with his tenure scheduled to end in 2026.

Secretary of the Association of Tutorial School Operators in Oyo State, Ogundokun Olufunso, said extensions breed overconfidence and loopholes. “Five years is enough. Extending it to 10 years is too much,” he said.

Olufunso also criticized JAMB’s policy of restricting services such as change of institution and O’level result uploads to its offices and CBT centres. He argued that the policy sidelines cybercafes, raises costs for candidates, and causes congestion.

However, he commended the adoption of computer-based testing, noting that it had sanitized the examination process and boosted enrolment in tutorial schools.

When contacted, JAMB spokesperson Fabian Benjamin declined to comment.
