UEFA will implement additional security measures at Euro 2024 after six fans attempted to take selfies with Cristiano Ronaldo during Portugal’s 3-0 win against Turkey on Saturday.
The football governing body announced that it will file criminal complaints against any supporter who invades the pitch.
German referee Felix Zwayer had to pause the game on four occasions as spectators ran onto the pitch, heading for Ronaldo. Two more fans also attempted to reach the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
In response to these incidents, UEFA has decided to enhance security at all venues to prevent further pitch invasions.
“Safety and security in the stadium, on the pitch, and at team facilities are the ultimate priority for UEFA, DFB (German Football Association), and Euro 2024,” a UEFA spokesperson told ESPN. “To this end, additional safety measures will be deployed in the stadiums to further meet the requirements of the tournament and to prevent such incidents. For reasons of security, we cannot comment further on specific measures.”
These measures aim to ensure a safe environment for players, officials, and fans throughout the tournament.
