The University of Lagos (UNILAG) made history on Monday by commissioning **eight electric buses**, the first of their kind in Nigeria, during its annual media parley. The event also featured the unveiling of the university’s official logo at its main gate to solidify its brand identity.
The electric buses, donated by *Ogata Global Resources*—a group of UNILAG alumni—represent a significant step toward promoting sustainable, eco-friendly transportation on campus. The zero-emission vehicles, powered by solar energy and electricity, aim to reduce environmental pollution, lower transportation costs for students, and improve campus mobility.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, **Prof. Folasade Ogunsola**, reiterated the institution’s longstanding commitment to environmental sustainability.
She said:
*“When the air quality was measured in this area, UNILAG had good quality air. It was almost an oasis of clean air in the region. One of the greatest causes of pollution is emissions from cars. We made up our minds long ago to avoid contributing to air pollution. You will also find that we do not have many generators around campus. We opted for a central generator system to minimise emissions, even though it came at a cost.”*
Ogunsola added that the buses were part of broader efforts to reduce the university’s carbon footprint. She further revealed that the initiative would cut student transport costs by **50%**, significantly easing their financial burden.
In his remarks, **Henry Eke**, Co-CEO of Ogata Global Resources, explained the motivation behind the donation.
*“We chose UNILAG because it’s a fertile ground for technology. The university already has an existing charging station, and this donation just adds to this infrastructure. We’ve also crashed the transport price to **₦100** for students. Additionally, we will involve students in a work-study initiative, enabling them to participate in the workforce by driving the buses.”*
The event featured a demonstration ride in the electric buses, showcasing their functionality and efficiency.
Following the commissioning, **Prof. Ogunsola** unveiled the university’s official logo at the main gate. She noted that the step was necessary to address the misuse of various unofficial logos and establish a consistent brand identity for the institution.
*“We identified that the logo at the gate was incorrect. To address this and properly depict our brand, we have ensured that the official logo is uploaded on our website. Today, we are unveiling the correct logo at the main gate to send a clear message about our identity to stakeholders and the public.”*
The milestone event reflects UNILAG’s dedication to innovation, sustainability, and effective brand representation while providing practical solutions to students’ transportation challenges.
