UNILAG Final-Year Student Aims to Break World Record for Longest Catwalk

Ololade Ayelabola, a final-year Computer Science student at the University of Lagos, is preparing to break the world record for the longest distance walked on a catwalk by a model. The current record, set in 1983 by Roberta Brown and Lorraine McCourt, stands at 114.4 km (71.1 miles). Ayelabola’s attempt, scheduled from September 29 to October 3 at the UNILAG Sports Centre, will span over 96 hours.

Her motivation comes from personal experiences of discrimination within the fashion industry. “I’ve seen many talented models sidelined due to stereotypes about height and appearance,” she shared, recalling a time when she was praised for her catwalk but rejected for being “too short.”

Determined to challenge these biases, Ayelabola’s walk will promote inclusivity and diversity, featuring models with albinism, vitiligo, freckles, tribal marks, and plus-sized individuals. “I want to inspire everyone to believe that with passion and hard work, you can be whoever you want to be.”

She expressed her gratitude for the support from the university community, especially the Vice Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola.
