The United Nations Peace and Positive Living Awareness Centre (UNPEPOLAC), under the United Nations Economic and Social Council, commemorated the International Day of Peace with a significant celebration held at the Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Center in Awka.
The event, organized in collaboration with the Institute for Peace, Security, and Development Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, centered on the theme: *”Cultivating a Culture of Peace: The Imperatives in Our Contemporary Society.”*
In his welcome address, Bishop Dr. Ozioma Ozoemena, the International Coordinator of UNPEPOLAC, stressed that both conflict and peace originate in the human mind. He emphasized the need for peace to be nurtured in individuals’ hearts and highlighted peace as humanity’s ultimate goal.
Bishop Ozoemena expressed concern over the rising insecurity and institutional failures in the country. He praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the enactment of the Anambra State Peace Building and Conflict Management Agency Law 2024, calling it a transformative step towards sustainable peace in the state.
Delivering a lecture on the event’s theme, Professor Jaja Nwanegbo of Nnamdi Azikiwe University stated that building a culture of peace requires instilling positive values and attitudes in individuals. He stressed that peace must always be pursued for the betterment of society, starting from each person.
Professor Echezona Ifejirika of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, and UNPEPOLAC award recipient Mr. Ikechukwu Odide, underscored forgiveness as a key to peace. They suggested the establishment of a body to resolve conflicts within communities and individuals, promoting a peaceful society.
Religious leaders at the event, including Right Reverend Kenneth Azoh and Pastor Japhet Kufre, also a UNPEPOLAC award recipient, emphasized that true peace comes from God, adding that those who truly know God can share peace with others.
The event concluded with cultural performances, award presentations, and remarks from various stakeholders.
