The leadership of Urum Community in Awka North Local Government Area has strongly refuted circulating rumors about the existence of a “kidnappers’ den” within the community. The claims, described as false and malicious, have reportedly caused unnecessary panic among residents and visitors.
In a public statement issued by Hon. Sir Felix Godwin Oranye, the President-General of the Urum Development Union, and supported by HRH Igwe Benedict Ofozoba Nweke, the traditional ruler of Urum, the leadership assured the public that thorough investigations by community leaders and security agencies found no evidence to substantiate the claims.
The statement identified the rumors as a deliberate attempt by mischief-makers to tarnish the image of Urum and destabilize the peace in the community. It described the allegations as politically motivated propaganda aimed at undermining the government’s efforts and the community’s stability.
“We urge the public to disregard this falsehood and continue their lawful activities without fear,” the statement read. “Urum remains a safe, peaceful, and welcoming community committed to the security and well-being of its residents and visitors.”
The community leadership also cautioned against the spread of unverified information, emphasizing that anyone found disseminating such rumors would face legal consequences.
For security concerns, residents are encouraged to contact the Chief Security Officer of the Urum Vigilante Group or community leaders through the official phone numbers provided.
