Real Madrid’s Brazilian forward, Vinicius Junior, expressed his determination on social media after finishing second in the 2024 Ballon d’Or race. In a viral post on X, Vinicius wrote, “I’ll do it 10x if I have to. They’re not ready,” signaling his commitment to eventually claim the prestigious award.
Real Madrid boycotted the Ballon d’Or ceremony held in Paris, citing disappointment over what it considered a lack of recognition for Vinicius. A club spokesperson told AFP, “If the award criteria doesn’t give it to Vinicius as the winner, then those same criteria should point to Carvajal as the winner. Since this was not the case, it is clear that Ballon d’Or-UEFA does not respect Real Madrid. And Real Madrid does not go where it is not respected.” Alongside Vinicius, Madrid nominees included Kylian Mbappe, Antonio Rudiger, Fede Valverde, and Jude Bellingham.
The Ballon d’Or, awarded by an international panel of 100 journalists, ultimately went to Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri, recognized for his contributions in securing a fourth consecutive Premier League title and Euro 2024 championship. The Amaury Group, which owns the French sports daily L’Equipe and France Football magazine, denied any premature release of the winner’s name, maintaining that “no player or club” knew the result ahead of time.
Rodri’s win surprised many, with Vinicius, who played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s Liga and Champions League successes, widely viewed as a favorite for the award.
