WAEC Nigeria Records 1.8 Million Candidates for 2024 WASSCE Examination

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has announced that a total of 1,814,344 candidates from 22,229 schools have registered for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

Dr. Amos Dangut, the Head of Nigeria Office at WAEC, revealed this during a briefing held on Monday at the WAEC Lagos Office. He disclosed that out of the registered candidates, 902,328 were males, while 912,016 were females.

Dangut noted, “A total of 1,814,344 candidates from 22,229 schools have registered for the examination. Out of this number, 902,328 are males, amounting to 49.73 per cent, while 912,016 are females, which is 50.27 per cent of the total candidature.”

He highlighted a significant increase in both male and female candidates compared to the previous year, with an overall increase of 192,948 candidates this year.

The WAEC Nigeria head assured that the council was fully prepared to conduct the examination, which is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, and end on June 24, 2024. He stated, “WASSCE for School Candidates, 2024 will take place between Tuesday, April 30, and Monday, June 24, 2024, in Nigeria, spanning seven weeks and six days.”

Dangut also mentioned that the examination would be conducted in four WAEC member countries: Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.

Regarding the examination process, Dangut revealed that candidates would be examined in 76 subjects, comprising 197 papers. He further explained that approximately 30,000 practicing senior secondary school teachers, nominated by various Ministries of Education, would supervise the examination.

In addition, Dangut emphasized the availability of WAEC’s online services, encouraging the public to utilize the WAEC Request Management Portal (WAEC CHATBOT) or chat with the Council via WhatsApp for inquiries. He also highlighted the WAEC verify platform, which provides tertiary institutions and other establishments access to the WAEC database for verifying prospective students’ results.
