Wesley University’s Best Graduating Student, Ifeoluwa Mercy Adeyemi, Shares Secrets to Her Success

The overall best-graduating student of Wesley University, Ondo, Miss Ifeoluwa Mercy Adeyemi, has shared the key factors behind her outstanding academic achievement. Adeyemi, who graduated with a degree in microbiology and an impressive Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.97, explained in an interview during the institution’s 13th convocation ceremony that her success was due to her focused approach to her studies.

One of the key decisions she made during her four years of study was deliberately avoiding relationships, particularly a boyfriend, to prevent any distractions. She explained that having a boyfriend during her undergraduate years could have diverted her attention from her primary goal—academic excellence. “I see it as a distraction because I cannot divide my mind,” she said, adding that the demands of a relationship would have interfered with her ability to concentrate on her books.

Adeyemi also credited her parents’ expectations as a strong motivator. “I have parents that I cannot disappoint,” she shared. “Anytime I found distractions, I would remind myself: your parents are out there, and you need to make them proud.” Her ambition to impact the health sector, especially through microbiology, also played a crucial role in her focus on her studies. She intends to continue her education with a master’s degree and eventually pursue a Ph.D., aiming to become a researcher and contribute to solving global health challenges.

During the convocation, the Vice Chancellor of Wesley University, Prof. Sunday Samuel Obeka, announced that 39 students graduated with First Class Honours out of 230 graduates. He emphasized the university’s dedication to holistic education and encouraged government support for private universities’ medical colleges to address the country’s healthcare workforce shortages.

The Chancellor, Senior Pastor Paul Enenche, awarded each First Class graduate a prize of N100,000, and the event featured a spiritual crusade led by Pastor Sunday Ogwuche. Additionally, Olori Comfort Kiladejo, the wife of the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, was honored with an honorary degree in Entrepreneurship and Humanitarian Service.
