Women Hospitalized After Alleged Police Shooting During Protest in Delta State

A distressing incident unfolded in Oteri community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, as five women currently find themselves in critical condition at Central Hospital, Ughelli, following an alleged altercation with police from the Ughelli Area Command.

The women, armed with leaves, were reportedly protesting against what they perceived as unlawful arrests, harassment, and intimidation by the police. Miss Valentine Adomi, a 24-year-old tailor, recounted her harrowing experience from her hospital bed, describing how she was caught in the crossfire as she attempted to approach her family members gathered outside the police station.

Mrs. Vivian Aphiare, another protester, highlighted the community’s grievances against the police, citing excessive roadblocks and arbitrary arrests, coupled with exorbitant bail demands. The women had intended to voice their concerns to the traditional ruler but were met with tear gas and gunfire upon reaching the police station.

Expressing outrage over the incident, Erakpofoke Peter, the President General of Oteri-Ughelli community, condemned the alleged brutality inflicted by the police. He asserted that the women’s protest aimed to draw attention to the unjust practices perpetrated by law enforcement within their community, which had led to economic hardship and fear among residents.

The victims currently receiving treatment at the hospital include Valentine Adomi, Edith Itive, Akaeze Joy, Loveth Brown-Tate, and Mrs. Lucky Philip, among others, each suffering from various injuries sustained during the altercation.

Efforts to obtain a response from the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, were unsuccessful at the time of publication. The incident underscores the urgent need for accountability and measures to address the grievances of the affected community members.
