World AIDS Day: Anambra State Government Targets Zero HIV Transmission Among Children

The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating HIV transmission among children as part of its efforts to achieve an AIDS-free state by 2030.

Speaking at a press briefing in Awka to mark the 2024 World AIDS Day, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, highlighted the significance of the day as a moment to reflect on progress made, address challenges, and prioritize inclusive and equitable strategies to support individuals living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Obidike noted that Anambra State has recorded significant achievements through the collaborative efforts of the State Ministry of Health’s AIDS/STI Control Programme (SASCP), the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA), development partners, and civil society organizations. He revealed that comprehensive HIV services are now accessible in 175 health facilities across the state’s 21 Local Government Areas.

From January to October 2024, 257,953 individuals were tested for HIV, with 3,138 testing positive. Of these, an impressive 99% were successfully linked to antiretroviral therapy. Currently, 49,067 individuals living with HIV in the state are receiving antiretroviral treatment.

As part of the state’s prevention strategies, over 1.4 million condoms and 26,640 lubricants have been distributed to promote safe practices among key populations and the general public. Dr. Obidike also emphasized the state’s progress in antenatal testing, with 56,199 pregnant women screened for HIV. Among them, 560 HIV-positive cases were identified, and all were linked to care, ensuring the prevention of mother-to-child transmission.

The integration of innovative technologies, such as m-PIMA machines for early infant diagnostics, has further strengthened the state’s capacity to test HIV-exposed infants promptly and link them to appropriate care.

The Health Commissioner reiterated the government’s resolve to sustain these efforts, urging individuals and communities to support the fight against HIV/AIDS to achieve a healthier and AIDS-free Anambra by 2030.
