The Rector of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), *Dr. Ibrahim Abdul*, has emphasized the need for Nigeria’s tertiary institutions to align with industry trends to produce graduates who are relevant and meet employers’ expectations.
Speaking at the maiden edition of *“A Day with Our Industry Partners”* held at the college campus in Yaba, Abdul stressed the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and the industry to bridge the skill gap.
“We have to collaborate with industry for resource development. The industry is moving at a fast pace, and we need to catch up to ensure that our graduates are relevant, skilled, and innovative. It is concerning when industry players say institutions are producing graduates who do not meet their needs,” he said.
He noted that relying on outdated teaching methods is counterproductive, urging institutions to update their curricula and engage in active partnerships with the private sector.
“As institutions, we should not rely on teachers using experiences they gained from their own teachers over 30 years ago. Collaboration between academia and industry is crucial. Here at YABATECH, we are working hard to be a center of excellence in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET),” he added.
Abdul further highlighted the need for donations of modern equipment from industry stakeholders to enhance hands-on learning experiences for students. He also called for mentorship programs and skill acquisition initiatives to equip students with first-hand industry knowledge.
The Chairman of the YABATECH Governing Council, *Prof. Funso Afolabi*, echoed the Rector’s sentiments, emphasizing that Nigeria’s development depends on producing graduates who possess the skills and innovation required to compete globally.
Representatives from organizations such as the *Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, NEM Insurance, CISCO,* and the *Canadian High Commission in Nigeria* commended YABATECH for its proactive approach in fostering industry-academia collaboration.
The event marked a significant step in strengthening partnerships between the college and industry leaders, aiming to enhance the quality and employability of graduates.
