The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) has voiced concern over the increasing hardship faced by Nigerians, urging President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to address the suffering in the country.
In a statement issued by its General Secretary, Oladipo Oyewole, the YCE expressed hope for a positive turnaround in Nigeria but acknowledged the severe difficulties currently being experienced by the populace. “There is, presently, a lot of suffering in the land,” the statement said.
The YCE emphasized the need for the government to prioritize the welfare of the masses, stating that providing a good quality of life for Nigerians should be a key focus. The statement stressed that recent challenges, such as the lack of regular electricity supply and the announced increase in fuel prices, have worsened daily living conditions for many citizens.
The council urged the Federal Government to shift its focus from distributing palliatives, which it said do not reach the people in need, and instead, implement sustainable measures that improve living conditions. “Every Nigerian should be entitled to enjoy our common resources,” the statement read.
The YCE called on President Tinubu to revisit his plans and address the short-term needs of Nigerians while working on long-term solutions for growth and development. The council also appealed for immediate action to alleviate the current economic strain, which they described as unbearable for many.
“The state of this nation today is a pill that has a bitter taste,” the YCE concluded, urging the President to act swiftly to ensure better governance and improve the living conditions of all Nigerians.
