Zimbabwe Unveils Michael Nees as New Head Coach Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Zimbabwe’s national football team, the Warriors, have appointed Michael Nees as their new head coach, as announced on Thursday. The German tactician steps into a role that has been vacant since the departure of Brazilian coach Baltemar Brito last year.

Nees, who has been tasked with leading Zimbabwe to their first-ever FIFA World Cup, faces a significant challenge. The Warriors are currently at the bottom of Group C in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with just two points from four matches.

The 57-year-old Nees brings experience from previous stints managing the national teams of Seychelles and Rwanda. His first official match in charge of Zimbabwe will be a crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya’s Harambee Stars next month.

The Zimbabwean Football Association has high hopes for Nees, believing he can turn around the team’s fortunes and guide them towards World Cup qualification.
