Alexia Putellas scored a stunning free-kick as Spain edged out Nigeria 1-0 in a closely contested Group C match in Nantes on Sunday.
Nigeria’s strategy involved sitting back and allowing La Roja to dominate possession early in the game. Despite Spain’s control, they struggled to penetrate the solid Nigerian defense, anchored by the experienced Osinachi Ohale.
Nigeria’s Esther Okoronkwo came close to breaking the deadlock in the 22nd minute, with her goal-bound effort saved by Spain’s goalkeeper, Cata Coll, after being set up by Rasheedat Ajibade.
Ajibade had another golden opportunity nine minutes before halftime, but failed to control the ball when played through on goal by Asisat Oshoala. On the other end, Nigeria’s goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made a spectacular save to deny Lucia Garcia just before the break.
Spain continued their dominance in the second half, with Salma Paralluelo’s goal being ruled out for offside in the 53rd minute. Ajibade missed another chance in the 65th minute, shooting wide from inside the box.
Osinachi Ohale made a crucial block to deny Aitana Bonmati 10 minutes from time, but Alexia Putellas eventually found the breakthrough with a sublime free-kick that beat Nnadozie in the 85th minute.
Substitute Chiwendu Ihezuo had a chance to equalize for Nigeria in stoppage time but missed the opportunity.
The Super Falcons will now face Japan in their final group game on Wednesday.
