The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Anambra State Branch, has successfully hosted its 2024 Lectures, Luncheon, and Awards Ceremony, celebrating individuals who have significantly contributed to justice, equality, and societal development.
The event, held at the FIDA Law Center in Awka and chaired by Justice Nkemdilim Izuako, honored several distinguished personalities, including a former Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Paul Obidigwe; Dean of the Faculty of Law, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Ogugua Ikpeze; and the Anambra State Commissioner for Special Duties, Barrister Beverly Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche.
Other award recipients were the Acting Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Professor Kate Omenugha; Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Mr. Akin Fakorede; and the retired Head of the Optometry Department, Anambra State Ministry of Health, Dr. Agatha Muoka, among others.
In her remarks, the FIDA Chairperson, Magistrate Genevieve Osakwe, alongside the Chairperson of the 2024 FIDA Week Planning Committee, Barrister Amara Muojeke, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to ensuring access to justice for women, children, and the less privileged. They described the annual event as an opportunity to reflect on FIDA’s core values and honor individuals advancing justice and equality, particularly for women and children.
Delivering a keynote lecture on the theme *“Innovate, Adapt, Thrive: Female Lawyers in a Changing Economy”*, Professor of Law and former High Court Judge Nkiru Obumneme-Okafor emphasized the impact of Nigeria’s economic challenges on the legal profession, particularly for female lawyers. She urged practitioners to leverage technology and social media to navigate the evolving economic landscape.
The ceremony featured captivating performances by law students from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University’s Igbariam Campus and Magistrate Marua Anyabolu. A health talk and other side attractions added color to the occasion, making it a memorable celebration of excellence and advocacy.
