The 1984 alumni of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have made a significant contribution to their alma mater by donating internet facilities aimed at boosting research and learning within the department. The donation, which includes cable LAN devices and 21 wireless access points, was part of the activities marking the 40th anniversary of the alumni class.

During the unveiling ceremony, the alumni chairman, Mr. Fred Ohwawha, highlighted the importance of the donation in equipping students with the necessary tools to stay competitive in the digital age. “We graduated from this university 40 years ago and have undertaken several projects since then. But we returned to see what more we could contribute. The Internet is provided for the students and staff in the faculty so that whenever they are around, there won’t be any problem with their academics,” Ohwawha stated.

He added that the initiative reflects the alumni’s commitment to giving back to the department that played a crucial role in shaping their professional lives.

Representing the UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Adelaja Odukoya, expressed gratitude to the alumni, noting that the donation underscores the strong and positive relationship between the university and its alumni. “This donation demonstrates the power of alumni engagement and commitment to the growth of our institution. You have set a shining example for future generations to follow,” Odukoya said.

Prof. Oloruntola Sunday, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, described the donation as “timely and appropriate,” emphasizing that it will significantly enhance the department’s ability to produce well-rounded graduates equipped for the demands of the digital age. He assured that the facilities would be well-maintained and properly utilized to benefit the students.
